Sunday November 21st, we have three amazing industry professionals at The Floor Dance Academy! Come dance and learn from 11-4pm from Koko Iwasaki, Ava "Ava Flav" Bernstine and Nico O'Connor. Ages 12+ Int/Adv.
Koko Iwasaki- Latin Jazz Fusion
Koine “Koko” Iwasaki was born in Kanagawa, Japan and moved with her family to the United States when she was two. She grew up in South Florida and began dancing at the age of 3. Through her years of dancing, Koko trained in all styles of dance and began her professional dance career at the age of 16. She has worked with artists such as Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, JBalvin, Becky G, Luis Fonsi, and Camila Cabello. In addition to appearances with artists, Koko went on world tours with artists such as Luis Fonsi and Maluma and also dance tours such as So You Think You Can Dance and Maks, Val and Peta from Dancing With The Stars.
Koko was also runner up on season 14 of “So You Think You Can Dance”, and now a Allstar/Mentor on the show. Other appearances for Koko include the Grammys, Billboard Awards, “The Ellen Show” and most recently the Savage X Fenty Runway show. She now lives in Los Angeles, CA pursuing his career as a professional dancer and educator.
Ava "Ava Flav" Bernstine- Hip Hop
Ava J Bernstine, affectionately called Ava Flav, native to Los Angeles, is one of the Industry’s sought after dancers. She is a well-versed dancer whose dance style is influenced by, but not limited to her hip-hop, jazz, ballet and contemporary training which is also prevalent in her diverse choreography.
Ava has toured the world with artists such as Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears. Some of her other credits include Usher, Chris Brown, Nikki Minaj and the feature film “ LaLa Land.”
Around 2010, Ava took her passion for dance and became an activist for dancers joining like-minded individuals of the Dancers Alliance committee. In 2012, she sat on the panel representing DA when they won the decades-long campaign for an industry-changing union music video contract through SAG- AFTRA. She is committed to the continual growth and change of the dance industry and the education of dancers.
Ava has also worked along side Debbie Allen since 2001, assisting her in multiple projects and teaching at the Debbie Allen Dance Academy. She is a young, energetic, and passionate dancer who, although teaches, is humbled and considers herself to still be a student of the art.
She enjoys teaching and believes that it is important as a dancer to know your history, and because dance is ever evolving, know where it’s going. Her style is fun, hard-hitting and funky and often has influences from her jazz training. Although feminine, she can get down just as hard as the guys. Ava's favorite quote: "Why Walk, When You Can Dance?"
Nico O'Connor- Jazz Funk
A California "Bay Area" native, with over ten years of dancing, teaching, and choreography experience, NiCo O'Connor's ability to move and learn choreography has always come naturally to him. Specializing in Hip-Hop AND Jazz Funk, his training also includes Mexican folk dancing, Salsa, Merengue, Jazz, Contemporary, and Ballet.
NiCo was a member of the non-profit dance troupe Culture Shock Oakland, and his theater credits include The Nutcracker with California Ballet Academy, Chino in West Side Story, Fleance in African American Shakespeare’s Company, The Macbeth Project, and in the ensemble casts of The Wizard of Oz, and Cinderella.
Now a working professional in Los Angeles, NiCo has been featured in ads for: Wal-Mart/Latin Grammys, Sean T's Rockin Body Fitness, and MC hammer's reality show. He's appeared in music videos for Finger 11, Stephie Ray, NLT, and was a dancer for artists Kat Graham, Prima J, and for P!nk at the 2010 American Music Awards. He has worked with choreographers Chonique Sneed and Lisette Bustamonte assisting on MTV's America's Best Dance Crew. He has also worked with Tabitha and Napolean as a dancer on the ABC show Mobbed.
NiCo's choreography credits include Latin Artist Noelia on her 40 Degreesinternational tour, Choreographers Carnival Ball, and Vietnamese International superstar Phuong Vy. He was an assistant choreographer for So You Think You Can Dance (Poland), to Chonique and Lisette on the 2011 Britney Spears Femme Fetalle World Tour, and Korean pop girl group, Girls Generation.
NiCo recently choreographed a duet between actors, Kristen Bell and Don Cheadle on Showtime's House of Lies. He continues to teach at various dance studios, gyms, schools, workshops, community events and kids' programs, educating youth on the principles of dance and promoting active lifestyles. His inner groove and sharp ear for musicality sets him apart from the rest. As a professional dancer, choreographer, and instructor, NiCo's passion for dance has allowed him to follow his dreams and achieve many goals, and now able to share his experience and knowledge with others who share the same passion.
